A New Chance rescues many of its dogs from shelters in the South where heartworm infections are more common. Heartworms are transmitted to dogs through mosquito bites, and in the South, a longer mosquito season means a greater risk for dogs.
If the heartworm is not treated, it can cause irreparable damage to a dog’s heart and lungs and eventual death. Sadly, heartworm disease can be easily prevented with a simple monthly preventative. Unfortunately, many of the dogs arriving at shelters have not had consistent or proper veterinary care.
Heartworm-positive dogs are often at higher risk for euthanasia because of the costs associated with the treatment they need. Once the dog is infected, the diagnosis and treatment of the heartworm infection can be lengthy and expensive. Complete treatment adhering to the American Heartworm Society’s protocols can range from $1,000 to $2,000.
At A New Chance, we don’t just pass up on otherwise healthy and adoptable dogs because they are heartworm-positive. As resources permit, we take them in and treat them while in foster care. If you are interested in sponsoring the treatment for a heartworm-positive dog to help heal their heart, please contact Sophia Silverman at info@anewchancear.org.
